Ready to explore on a budget? Here are some expert tips to help you save money while still enjoying amazing travel experiences.
Top 19 Tips For Traveling on a Budget
1. Book in Advance
Booking early gives you access to a wider selection of options at lower prices. Airfare and hotel rates tend to spike closer to travel dates. While last-minute cruise deals sometimes pop up, it’s usually best to plan ahead—especially if you’re not near a cruise port. We typically plan our trips 12–18 months in advance for both domestic and international travel.
Do you always have to book trips early?
Previously, 6–12 months was sufficient to book land trips, and 12–18 months for cruises. However, post-COVID demand has changed the game, with some cruises booking out two years in advance.
2. Find Flexible Cancellation Policies
If you find a great deal with a solid cancellation policy, don’t hesitate to book. Why? Because with flexible policies, you can always cancel and rebook if a better deal arises. If the cancellation policy isn’t clearly outlined, email the hotel for written confirmation before booking.
3. Travel During Shoulder or Off-Season
If your schedule allows, traveling during the shoulder or off-season can save you a lot of money. Peak travel times vary depending on the destination, so avoid popular holidays and school breaks. You’ll not only save money but also enjoy fewer crowds.

How can you save time?
By avoiding the peak season, you’ll spend less time in lines and waiting for reservations, making your trip more enjoyable and efficient.
Our Disney Experience
We visited Disney World in early December to avoid both the heat and crowds. After that trip, we were spoiled and can’t imagine going back during the busier summer months.
Keep in mind: Some attractions or restaurants may have reduced hours or be closed during the off-season, so plan accordingly.
4. Travel With A Group
Traveling with another family or friends allows you to split costs on accommodations, car rentals, and even groceries. We often travel with parents and grandparents, which makes for memorable experiences while saving money.
5. Use Credit Card Rewards
Look into your credit card’s reward program to help offset costs. If you’re new to this, I recommend checking out The Points Guy for expert tips on maximizing travel rewards.
6. Leverage AAA and Wholesale Club Deals
Are you a member of AAA or a wholesale club like Costco? These memberships often come with travel discounts. We booked a Disney World trip through Costco and saved money on park passes and accommodations.
Costco also offered us onboard credit, WiFi, and a beverage package on a Mediterranean cruise we took in 2022!
7. Consult A Travel Agent
While I usually enjoy researching and planning trips myself, there are times when using a travel agent can be beneficial. They may have access to deals or perks that aren’t available online. Plus, most travel agents don’t charge fees, so there’s nothing to lose.
8. Set Flight Alerts
Flights typically become available around 11 months in advance. Set a price alert through Google Flights, Kayak, Skyscanner, or Hopper to track changes and ensure you get the best deal.
9. Opt for Budget Airlines and Public Transportation
Transportation is often one of the biggest travel expenses. Consider using budget airlines that offer lower fares but may charge extra for amenities like checked baggage. Once you arrive, public transportation (buses, trains) is typically cheaper than taxis or rental cars, especially in cities.

10. Stay in Budget Accommodations
Accommodations can eat up a big chunk of your budget. Consider staying in hostels, which offer dormitory-style rooms at low rates. Airbnb is another great option, allowing you to rent a room or apartment from a local, often for less than a hotel. Always check reviews and compare prices.
11. Cook Your Own Meals
Dining out for every meal can quickly become expensive. Save money by cooking your own meals. Look for accommodations with kitchen facilities, or bring along portable cooking gear. Shopping at local markets for ingredients is also a fun and budget-friendly way to experience local culture.
12. Take Advantage of Free Activities and Attractions
When traveling on a budget, free activities can enhance your trip without hurting your wallet. Look for local parks, free admission days at museums, and walking tours. Many cities offer free concerts, festivals, and events throughout the year. These options allow you to experience the local culture at no cost.

13. Avoid Tourist Traps
While tourist spots can be fun, they are often overpriced. Getting off the beaten path allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and save money. Explore less-touristy neighborhoods for a more authentic experience. However, sometimes a tourist trap is worth it—just be selective and budget accordingly.
14. Fly Mid-Week
Flights are generally cheaper on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If your travel dates are flexible, aim for mid-week departures to save on airfare. According to Nerdwallet, flying on a Tuesday can save you up to 24% compared to peak prices on Sundays—about $85 per ticket on average!
15. Pack Well
Packing efficiently can save you money, especially if you avoid checked baggage fees. Opt for a carry-on and pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. Don’t forget essentials like a reusable water bottle and a small first-aid kit to avoid unnecessary expenses during your trip.
16. Be Aware of ATM Charges
ATM fees abroad can add up quickly. Look into travel credit cards that waive foreign transaction fees, or research banks that offer free international ATM withdrawals. This will help you avoid hefty charges and make your trip more affordable.
17. Try To Haggle (When Appropriate)
In many regions, haggling is a normal part of shopping. Don’t be afraid to negotiate prices at markets or with street vendors, but be respectful. Always aim for a fair price that benefits both parties.
18. Get Recommendations From Locals
Locals know the best hidden gems. Whether it’s a great restaurant or a lesser-known attraction, they can offer valuable insights. Strike up a conversation, ask for tips, and be open to trying something new.
19. Walk everywhere
Walking is a great way to explore your destination, and it saves you money on transportation. Discover new neighborhoods, parks, and landmarks while soaking in the local atmosphere. Just make sure to stay aware of your surroundings and take safety precautions, especially at night.
Conclusion
Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing amazing experiences. By using these practical tips, you can embark on incredible journeys while keeping your wallet intact. All are sensational tips.
Traveling during the off season will help you save so much money it will make your head spin. I remember booking a place in Phuket during peak low season. When we checked it during peak high season the price literally tripled. Plus, even though there are more storms during the low season in Phuket and other tropical places you actually get sun much of the time and can enjoy the beach, hiking or any outdoor activity. Very few places have genuinely gloomy weather for the entirety of the low season.
Thanks for sharing this rocking post.
Thanks for the info about Phuket. Thailand is near the top of our bucket list!
